Wearable devices make mankind closer to the technology than older times but Google had raised this technology to an all new level. Google is now on a project called ‘Smart contact lens’ which currently has nothing to do with usual Google features like Gmail, Drive etc. but has lot more to do to eradicate one of the biggest health issue humanity is facing – Diabetes.
On 16 January 2014 Google unveiled about a latest technology product , ‘smart contact lens’, which is a part of burgeon wearable technology, the latest in a series of technology products delineated to monitor body functions. The intention was originally funded by the National Science Foundation and was first taken over by Microsoft. The smart contact lens was invented by Brian Otis and Babak Parviz, working for Google’s secret lab, Google X, who was the faculty members of the electrical engineering department at the University of Washington. The project smart contact lens is being carried out by Google’s secret lab, Google X and it is currently being tested using prototypes.
By now almost everyone has heard of Google Glass, is a type of wearable technology that displays information to the wearer via a small prism. Now, there’s the Google’s smart contact lens-Wearable Technology, which constantly monitor the glucose levels of diabetic patients by means of their tears so that they can more easily control the disease. Over the years, many scientists have scrutinized different body fluids, such as tear fluid, in aspiration of discovering an easier approach for tracking the glucose levels of human body. But as we can imagine, tear are tough to amass and study. At Google X, the Google’s secret lab, we wondered if miniaturised electronics like chips and sensors, so minuscule they look like ‘bits of glitters’ and also there is a thin wireless antenna, which is very slighter than a human being’s hair , might be a way to crack the mystery of tear glucose and measure it with greater accuracy.
The Google smart lens is a prototype that monitors and continually measures blood sugar levels and also corrects vision in a new way. Novartis and Google Inc. are joining force to work together on this smart contact lens that observes and monitors the blood sugar levels in the tears and also for people living with presbyopia (It may be a disorder which affects a person’s optic lens and disables the ability to focus). The lens helps to correct the vision such as, on lenses of auto focus camera, like wise it restores the natural autofocus of human eye on nearby objects. The prototype houses a miniaturised glucose sensor and wireless chip that are ingrained between two layers of the thin and soft lens material. There is a tiny pin hole in the smart lens, that lets the tear-fluid to flow in to the glucose sensor to determine the sugar levels.
When we wear smart contact lens, the electronics lies exterior of both the iris and the pupil, so it will not make any harm to the eye and eyesight. A thin wireless antenna, which is very slighter than a human being’s hair, is embedded inside the smart lens. The antenna inside the lens will function as a controller to convey information and details to the wireless gadget such as smart phones. Antenna can amalgamate, comprehend and inspect the information. The tested archetype generates readings in every second. Not only measuring the glucose levels, but also the smart contact lens-Wearable Technology can correct vision such as a lens on auto focus camera.
Nowadays about 382 million people, one in every 19 throughout the world have become diabetes. Diabetes is a class of diseases, where the amount of glucose in your body is too high, so the body is unable to deal with sugar in a proper manner. We may not accustom with the daily fight that many diabetic patients face as they try to keep their blood sugar levels under control. Unrestrained blood sugar level puts peoples at risk of dangerous complications, some limited and others long term, including damages to kidneys, eyes and heart.
The diabetes is recommended to check their sugar level periodically either pricking their fingers or living with a thick needle insert in their stomach. Even though some people wear glucose sensor embedded under their skin to monitor the glucose levels continually. These all methods are very rude and agonizing and as a result, the diabetic’s people check their blood glucose less often than they should. The Google smart contact lens-Wearable Technology is a pain free and time consuming alternative for diabetic patients. The smart contact lens gathers and measures the glucose level continually and also informs the patients through app or any external devices such as mobile phone. Thus the smart lens has come as a boon to so many diabetics around the world.
The Google smart lens-Wearable Technology, will be the initial bump to the commercial market and others are being experimented or researched, including the following.
The increased lactic acid levels on the tear fluid are a hint about the failure of heart, lung disease and liver disease. The technology for the lactic acid sensor is similar to the glucose sensor used in the Google smart contact lens-Wearable Technology.
Tears also contain a chemical called lacryglobin, this chemical level is linked with a certain form of cancers such as colon, prostate, breast, ovarian and lung cancer. A sensor that monitors lacryglobin level in the tear fluid is very helpful for these patients.
The developers of smart contact lens-Wearable Technology, designed a method of pulling energy from surrounding radio frequency waves to power the smart contact lens. The company is experimenting on the feasibility of adding microscopic LED light to signify the users, when glucose levels exceed a critical limit. This wearable-technology project, smart contact lens, is still in the initial phase and however it might become a reality for customers within the next five years.
