How LCD TV Works?

This is an age of science and it has changed everything under the sun. Since the past centuries this present century has seen much new advancements in the field of technology. These technological advancements have helped us in making our life much better than it was in the past. Today, there are cell phones, laptops, internet and many other facilities that help us to communicate and connect to the world while sitting in one's bedroom. Today, the whole world is at our disposal. This new world is called as globalized world since all the men in the world are connected to one another through different modes of communication. These modes include social networking websites and the different applications in the smart phones that allow us to be within the reach of our friends all the time without any break. Among the other discoveries and inventions that have changed our life one of the most important inventions in the field of science is the liquid crystal display. The short form of liquid crystal display is called as LCD. Almost a decade back there was no such concept of LCD and this technology was only limited to the screens of calculator but now this technology can be seen in every home, office, hospital, airport in the form of televisions.

Introduction

A liquid crystal display also known as LCD is a display that uses a flat panel, electronic visual display. This display uses the properties of the light modulating liquid crystals. According to a research, these liquid crystals do not emit light directly.

LCD

The liquid crystal display uses the same basic technology as in the other displays with an exception that in liquid crystal display the arbitrary images are made up of large number of small pixels while on the other hand, the other displays have larger elements than the liquid crystal display.  Today, we use the LCD display in a wide range of applications. These applications include computer monitors, televisions, instrument panels, aircraft cockpit displays and signage. This type of display is a very common in our consumer devices such as DVD players, gaming devices, table clocks. These displays are also used in our calculators and telephones. In the televisions, these displays have replaced the cathode ray tube display. One of the great advantages in using an LCD is that in LCD there is no use of phosphorus so the display doesn’t suffer from image in burn. When it comes to disposing of the LCD screen is more energy efficient and it can be disposed of with more safety. The LCD screen has low electrical power consumption. This feature allows the LCD to be used in devices that run on battery. According to a research in 2008, sales of the LCD screen televisions exceeded from the sales of the television that uses the cathode ray technology.

Construction

Construction of LCD TV

The LCD consists of a thin layer of liquid crystal that is present between the two glasses. The transparent electrode deposited on the glass substrate to control the reorientation. On the top and the bottom of the glass surface along parallel line of electrodes in order to get a single pixel display the overlap between a row and column of electrode is used. In order to get a two pixel display one row of electrode is used in combination with two columns of electrodes. Inorder to give display the LCD uses two types of technology, one is called as passive matrix and other is called as active matrix technology. The activator's technology is further divided into two types. One is called twisted nematic and other scholars in plane switching.

How LCD TV Works?

The most important principle that lies behind the working of a liquid crystal display is that when these crystals off liquid are exposed to the electric current they untwist because of this current. The untwisting of these molecules tends to change the angle of the light that is passing through them. This change causes a change in angle of the top polarizing filter with respect to it. This causes a very less little live to pass through that particular area of the LCD. As a result the area becomes darker and in contrast to other areas on the screen. The darker areas when tend to merge with one another they form a figure on the screen and the resultant images are formed on the screen.

Advantages

The LCD screen as compared to other screen is very compact and light in weight. In an LCD screen there is no geometric distortion. In an LCD screen there is very little emission of heat during the operation and is also results in low power consumption. In compared to a CRT monitor, the LCD screen is very thin which allows the device to be placed at a much farther distance from the user. An LCD screen when is operated at native resolution there is a razor sharp image on the screen. In an LCD screen there is every little emission of electromagnetic radiation. A great advantage in an LCD screen is that it can be made into almost any size or shape. Another advantage is that is associated with an LCD screen is the masking effect. In an LCD screen there is no theoretical resolution limit.

Disadvantages

One of the great disadvantages using an LCD screen is that it is very limited viewing angle which causes the brightness and saturation to very. The brightness distortion and also caused due to uneven backlighting in some of the monitors. One of the great disadvantage that may arise in intensity is that the liquid crystal sometimes cannot completely block all of the light that is passing through them this causes the black levels to be unacceptably bright. Another important disadvantage that may occur in the LCD's dad they may become dead or stuck pixels during the manufacturing of this problem may occur during the use. In an environment where there is a very high temperature a loss of contrast may occur in an LCD. Another important disadvantage that is associated with an LCD is that in the direct sunlight the LCD shows a poor display and it cannot be used with the light guns. If a person is wearing polarized sunglasses it would be very hard for him to see on an LCD.

LED vs. LCD

LED stands for light emitting diode while LCD stands for liquid crystal display. The LCD screen is basically a LED however there are few differences that exist between the both technologies. The difference lies in the brightness of the image. However, LED is more preferred and used now a day.
