It’s very funny and an interesting job to build an Art Robot that can do art or drawing with you…a Robot Art!!! Here we are introducing a funny and cute Robot Art - A simple DIY Art Robot, which can do drawings on a paper without your help. As shown in the figure, it is simple and easy to design an art robot for school going students or hobbyists for their Science Projects or exhibitions. Here we describe the step by step procedure for making the art robot… Go through these steps and build your own ‘Robot Art’– the ‘Art Robot’ and enjoy drawing with your new friend….

Working Principle of Robot Art, A simple DIY Art Robot:

The working principle of art robot is simple; it just needs only a small motor and a battery to power the motor. By connecting the battery with the motor, the motor starts spinning. A load or weight is attached to the motor, which helps the motor to vibrate and stagger across the paper when the battery is connected. The markers are used as its legs for movement. As long as the motor starts vibrating, it makes the art robot to stagger across the surface or paper.

Materials and Equipment Required for Making Robot Art, A simple DIY Art Robot:

  • 9V DC motor: 1 No.
  • 9V battery: 1No.
  • 9V battery holder: 1No.
  • Wires
  • Wire cutter and Plier
  • Plastic Glass or Bottle
  • Sketch Pen/Markers : 3 No.s
  • White paper
  • Electrical Insulation Tape
  • Adhesive Tape or Gum
  • Materials for decorating the Art Robot
  • Cork and stick
  • Googly Eyes
  • Scissors and knife
  • Screw driver

Note: An adult guidance is recommended for some of the Robot Art, A simple DIY Art Robot’s making steps.

                    Parts of Art Robot

Procedure for Building Robot Art, A simple DIY Art Robot:

1. Collect all the required equipments and materials for making the  Robot Art, A simple DIY Art Robot as shown in the figure 1.

2. First take the battery holder and properly insert the battery into the battery holder (9Volt).

3. Then take the cork and carefully press the cork on to the shaft of the motor as shown in the figure 2 , and make sure that there should be a small gap between the motor body and the bottom part of the cork, otherwise the cork will get stuck on the motor and it will cause difficulty for the motor spin.

                                             Fig2: Motor with cork

4. Now take the plastic cup or any other material, in which you want to build your Art robot’s body.

5. Twist the cup and put three holes on the cup using a knife with parental guide, one for inserting the small shaft of the motor that should stick on the surfac of the cup and the other holes are for inserting the wires of the motor.

6. With a double sided adhesive tape, climb the motor on the top portion of the cup firmly. Also thread the wires of the motor through the two holes provided on the cup and fit the motor tightly on the cup surface using adhesive tapes.

7. Using the same double sided adhesive tape, mount the battery holder firmly inside the plastic cup as shown in the figure3.

8. The power switch should be fixed in such a way that it faces down for ease of operation.

9. Now twist the battery holder and motor wires well together. Before doing this makes sure that the power of the battery holder is in off position.

10. Provide proper insulation on the wires using the electrical insulation tape. Cut required piece of insulation tape and wrap the tape around the uncover metal parts of black and red wires otherwise there is more chances for creating a short circuit and it will make the circuit very hot. So avoid this situation by providing proper insulation on the wires using an electrical insulation tape.

11. Now it’s time to test your complete Robot Art circuit arrangements since you have already connected the wires from the motor to the battery holder with an insulation tape.

12. Now hold the plastic cup and turn ON the battery holder switch. Now the cork should start rotating.

13. If the cork does not spin, then check the wires and if needed peel off the insulation tape and recheck, if it is twisted correctly and firmly together. And also check the cork position if it is very near to the motor shaft so there is more chance to stuck up. Also check that the batteries are properly inserted into the battery holder.

14. After checking or correcting the motor spinning condition, attach the three sketch pens with the plastic cup using adhesive tape as shown in the figure 4.

15. Now it is the time to embellish your Robot Art, A simple DIY Art Robot. You can decorate the Art Robot in your own style and give colours with markers and paints, fix googly eyes etc. is up to your imagination. So it’s your duty to make your Art Robot the most beautiful drawing robot.

16. Attach a light weight wooden piece or ice cream stick (popsicle stick) to the cork as shown in figure 5. Note that the stick should properly fix with the cork using an adhesive tape.

17. After the completion of all the above steps and arrangement, for testing the Robot Art, A simple DIY Art Robot, take a white paper board. Place the Art Robot  in the middle of the paper board and let the robot to run by turning ON the battery holder switch.

18.  Also check the robot, by adjusting the wooden stick (popsicle stick) in different position. It is recommended to arrange the stick as off centered position for   better results.

Conclusion:

For a beginner, the Robot Art, A simple DIY Art Robot can be a milestone step towards the robotic field. The Art Robot can be easily built by school going students or a robotic hobbyist.  You can make further modifications according to your imagination and skills. If you want to make a project related to robotics, the right choice is here… you can start with this Robot Art, A simple DIY Art Robot ….. and enjoy your new friends drawings…….
